Minnesota radon rules

  • Licensing: MDH licenses radon mitigation professionals and tells homeowners to avoid unlicensed installers [MN-2]. Check a license with MDH’s Radon Service Providers search [MN-5].
  • System tags: when the system is finished, the licensed professional puts an MDH radon system tag on it. The tag shows the installer name, phone number, install date and license number [MN-1]. Owners can ask MDH for a free inspection of any system installed after June 2020 [MN-1][MN-2].
  • Real estate (Minnesota Radon Awareness Act): before signing a sale agreement, the seller must disclose in writing whether radon tests were done, the most recent results, any mitigation, and details of any system. The disclosure includes the required radon warning statement, and the seller must provide MDH’s “Radon in Real Estate Transactions” publication. This applies to agreements signed on or after Jan 1, 2014. A seller who knows material radon facts and doesn’t disclose them is liable to the buyer, who has two years after closing to sue [MN-3].
  • Price warning from MDH: be careful with quotes under $1,000, which MDH says are often “too good to be true” [MN-2].
